will gather to cover tonight's debate. more importantly, this is a stage where president obama and governor mitt romney will hopefully define their positions on the key domestic issues facing our nation. that's what's on the agenda for this debate tonight; jobs, the economy, health care. but first, a new distraction for the obama campaign during a critical week. it comes in the form of a video released by "the daily caller" of then-presidential candidate barack obama back in 2007. in it he speaks to a group mostly made up of black pastors. his speech got some coverage at the time he delivered it, but his prepared remarks did not include some of the off-the-cuff, off-prompter moments, if you will, alluding to alleged racism to hurricane katrina and spending decisions made by our elected leaders. our chief congressional correspondent mike emanuel is live in washington with more. mike? >> reporter: hi, megyn. the tone has attracted some attention with then-candidate obama sounding different as he spoke to a large group of african-american religious leaders in virginia. one major topic

hasn't been in office and wasn't part of make thag debt and president obama has over seen in fact the unprecedented increase in size of the federal debt, and as a matter of fact in talking to senior people from romney land that is exactly what mitt romney means to do when he gets on that debate stage in denver, is go off the president not just on what romney says are ineffectual policies like the president's healthcare law and stimulus packages, but the cost of those policies as compared to romney's own perscriptions that call for smaller less expensive government. for the president what he's going to try to do is say look, maybe things aren't so great but it is partly the fault of george w. bush and the republicans who were in office prior to the democrats taking control in 2009, so we need time to fix it, and by the way, the president will also say that he wants to increase taxes on people like mitt romney to help pay down some of that debt. >> reporter: we just put of that graphic there showing the $16 trillion of debt and there are so many digits it almost doesn't fit on the tv sc

years politically has been that republicans are very determined that barack obama ought not be the president anymore, and democrats go back and forth about the fire that they feel to keep him in office. so that's something that we've expected to see. but as the president stumbled in the debate and as he's had a rough week, that problem's been exacerbated. megyn: all right. not to sound too cynical, chris -- [laughter] i mean, they wanted to vote for barack obama -- they were extremely likely to vote for him a couple weeks ago, and now they're extremelyy likely to voe for mitt romney? i don't know. there was a piece by john padores in the new york post saying we can't trust these polls, the only thing we can walk away knowing is this is going to be an extremely close contest. >> i think he's missing it a little bit here. the truth is this, no one poll is fully accurate. what they are are snapshots, little glimpses of what's going on. they don't tell us what's going to happen on election day. for example, this: we know that republicans traditionally outperform polls and democrats tra
